St. Elmo, Colorado

Snow, Mountains and Scenery - St. Elmo, Colorado

A sunny winter day in Colorado ...
March 7, 2015 - I paid a visit to St. Elmo, the wonderful ghost town along Chalk Creek in Chaffee County. With it being an unusually sunny and temperate day for March, it was a perfect outing. Below are my photos of mountains, snow, and the historic buildings that comprise of this village. Also, be sure to enjoy the two videos at the bottom -- the first one is eleven minutes long as I walked around.

My picture-taking began early on as I hopped onto Chaffee County Road 321 from Buena Vista and traveled west.

TOP: The beautiful view of Mount Princeton.

SECOND: The gorgeous sight of Mount Antero as I came down the hill.

Mountains More mountain scenery as I drove west on Chaffee County Road 162.

Agnes Vaille Falls Trailhead

If you're acquainted with Chalk Creek Canyon (west of Nathrop and the Mount Princeton Hot Springs), then you're probably well aware of the stunning mountains on this drive.

TOP: A prominent mountain at the clearing near the Mount Princeton Campground and the massive hill up to Cascade Falls and the Railroad Grade Trail.

SECOND: The Agnes Vaille Falls Trailhead is closed indefinitely after five hikers were tragically killed from a rock slide in September 2013. The parking lot has been barricaded.

Snowy Drive

Snowy Winter Road

There is PLENTY OF SNOW in Chalk Creek Canyon. Woooo hoooo!

Long last winter... may spring and summer never come. KEEP IT SNOWING!

Adjacent are two snowy shots as I continued up Chalk Creek Canyon.

As a side note, the snow-covered ridge/peak left of center is Peak 13078' that a friend and I climbed last year. :)

Snowmobile Meeting Place

Even thought it's considered a ghost town, you will likely encounter many people during the daylight hours. This is a popular launching point for snowmobilers to explore the mountainsides.

TOP: One of many private homes that remain in tact. Be advised that most of the properties in St. Elmo are PRVIATE. Do not trespass. Stay on the roads, take pictures if you wish, and leave no trace.

SECOND: I believe that was a barn and stable on the right. Pretty mountains in hte background.

Chipmunk Area For those of you who LOVE feeding the chipmunks in the summer, this is the spot where they beg.

Hopefully those critters aren't buried in the snow right now. :)
